About pearls
What are pearls
Pearls form naturally when an oyster or mussel creates layers of nacre on top of a foreign body that has entered the pearl oyster to protect itself from it. When the foreign body has been placed there intentionally it is called a cultivated pearl. There are two main types of pearls; freshwater and saltwater pearls. These are further divided into a vast variety of pearls when it comes to size, colour and shape depending on where and in what oyster or mussel they are formed, making each pearl completely unique with it’s own personal aesthetic.
Our approach
At Sara Robertsson Jewellery we prioritize high-quality pearls to support better farming conditions, as quality requires care and conscious farming. Instead of only using the more popular and classic white pearls we also select pearls with a variety of colours and shapes. Some of these might even be considered bi-products when farmers aim for the perfectly round shape. "We value consciously choosing and treasuring all these kinds of pearls and their uniqueness, as this also supports less wasteful farming practices.”
All pearls are set in-house and wherever possible using creative setting solutions avoiding harsh chemicals. The pearls used are of natural colour and are mostly traceable down to the particular farm. There is a current focus on traceable freshwater and Akoya (saltwater) pearls but future releases will also add conscious Tahiti pearls to the range.
